President Obama learns how to program computer code

President Barack Obama did something today that no president has done before: he wrote some computer code.

Obama helped launch the annual Computer Science Education Week at the White House today, by working on a coding session with 20 middle school students. He completed some coding exercises using Google's Blockly tool, and wrote a line of code using JavaScript.

The program he worked on is pretty simple: it draws circles on a screen.

Obama has previously urged students and professionals to learn to code. "Learning these skills isn't just important for your future. It's important for our country's future," he said last year. "If we want America to stay on the cutting edge, we need young Americans like you to master the tools and technology that will change the way we do just about everything."
