Unreal Engine 4 maker Epic Games released a third entry today in its series of developer diaries about the "Infiltrator" tech demo, with the latest video explaining the creation of a particular explosion.
According to Francois Antoine, senior visual effects artists at Epic, producing the explosion required the use of techniques similar to the ones employed for special effects in film. The new technique is called "volume texture," and it involves the combination of a three-dimensional texture with GPU particles. Epic developed the volumetric explosion because "sprite-based explosions don't have that cohesive feel," said Antoine.
