Epic explains explosion from Unreal Engine 4 'Infiltrator' demo

Unreal Engine 4 maker Epic Games released a third entry today in its series of developer diaries about the "Infiltrator" tech demo, with the latest video explaining the creation of a particular explosion.

According to Francois Antoine, senior visual effects artists at Epic, producing the explosion required the use of techniques similar to the ones employed for special effects in film. The new technique is called "volume texture," and it involves the combination of a three-dimensional texture with GPU particles. Epic developed the volumetric explosion because "sprite-based explosions don't have that cohesive feel," said Antoine.

You can watch Epic go into excruciating technical detail, and see the final explosion effect, in the video above. Epic debuted the "Infiltrator" demo at the 2013 Game Developers Conference. The first two videos in this series are available here and here.
