See MLB 14 The Show's Player Lock and Quick Counts in action

Samit Sarkar (he/him) is Polygon’s deputy managing editor. He has more than 15 years of experience covering video games, movies, television, and technology.

With MLB 14 The Show, developer Sony San Diego is focusing on giving players more options to shorten their games with new features such as Quick Counts and Player Lock, as seen in a developer diary the studio released today.

If you turn on Quick Counts, you won't have to play complete at-bats — you'll start at counts like 1-1, 0-2 or even 3-2. Player Lock brings MLB The Show's single-player career mode, Road to the Show, into every other game mode: You can choose to play as any single player on your team. That way, you'll only partake in plays they're involved in; the game will simulate everything else.

Check out our preview of MLB 14 and the developer diary above — which only features PlayStation 3 footage — for more details. The game will be released April 1 on PS3 and PlayStation Vita, and in May on PlayStation 4.
