Tony Hawk's Pro Skater began with Bruce Willis on a skateboard

Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

The first character to ride a board in the Tony Hawk Pro Skater series was not, in fact, Tony Hawk. It was Bruce Willis,

The action-flick star was featured in the big-budget adventure Apocalypse, which Activision had asked Neversoft to develop back in 1998 for the PlayStation. That game is little remembered, but Activision also requested the studio get to work on a side project, a skateboarding game. When Neversoft was ready to pitch that to its titular star, the working model they showed featured none other than Bruce Willis on a skateboard. Holding a gun.

Despite the hilarious incongruity, Tony Hawk signed on and put his name on one of the best and most successful sports series spanning the PlayStation-PS2 generation. The YouTube series Did You Know Gaming recounts these origins, and more, in its latest look at a console classic.

DYK Gaming's video last broke down the origins of Harvest Moon. Its long-running series discusses the origins of games spanning Fallout to Silent Hill and Metal Gear Solid.
