The Art of the Game documentary about students competing for a position in the industry premieres May 8

The Art of the Game, a feature-length documentary that focuses on college students as they compete for a position in the game industry and documents the "cultural shift in the entertainment people enjoy," premieres May 8, 2K and Story Developing announced today.

Directed by Matthew Davis Walker, The Art of the Game premieres live on Machinima's Twitch channel on May 8 at 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. PDT and Xbox Live via Machinima's app on Xbox One and Xbox 360 May 9-11. The film will go live on Machinima's YouTube channel and the film's official Facebook page from May 12.

2K Games and Gearbox Software partnered with the Academy of Art University last March for a development project that tasked students with creating a short film based on the Borderlands universe. Students participating in the Borderlands Cooperative formed teams to produce an animated short under the guidance of university professors and industry personnel.

A panel of judges consisting of Gearbox, 2K and Academy of Art University employees selected one story to form the basis of the short film and "become part of the Borderlands mythos," while the winning team was awarded 2K Games internships. You can check out The Art of the Game trailer above.

"When 2K partnered with the Academy of Art University last year we saw just how much talent the students have, and it inspired us to share their passion and creativity with the world through this documentary," 2K vice president of marketing Matt Gorman said in a prepared statement.
