Valiant Hearts: The Great War is faithful to World War I history

Samit Sarkar (he/him) is Polygon’s deputy managing editor. He has more than 15 years of experience covering video games, movies, television, and technology.

Valiant Hearts: The Great War developer Ubisoft Montpellier worked with the creators of the documentary series Apocalypse, World War I in making the adventure game, publisher Ubisoft announced yesterday.

The collaboration allowed Ubisoft Montpellier to incorporate real photos from the Apocalypse, World War I database into the game's encyclopedia. During Valiant Hearts, players will occasionally see pop-ups with historical facts and documents that are relevant to something they just did in the game. In addition, the developers researched the locations of World War I battles so they could set certain sequences of Valiant Hearts amid those conflicts.

Apocalypse, World War I is a co-production of the French company CC&C and the Canadian firm Ideacom International. The five-part documentary series premiered on television in France and Canada earlier this year.

Valiant Hearts: The Great War is set for release June 25 on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Check out our preview for more information.
