Paul Bettner, the co-creator of Words with Friends, is making a new game called Lucky's Tale exclusively for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset.
Lucky's Tale is being created through a partnership with Bettner's new company, Playful Corp. (formerly Verse), and publisher Oculus VR. The third-person platformer will be playable at Oculus VR's E3 booth next week.
"Virtual reality — I mean truly accurate, comfortable virtual reality — is the most important thing to happen to interactive entertainment in decades," Bettner said. "I know it sounds like exaggeration, but it’s impossible to explain what this is like to someone who hasn’t experienced it for themselves. Your brain is convinced that you are somewhere else, that you are in another world. I have worked my entire career to get to this moment, to create something like this."
Brothers David and Paul Bettner created the With Friends series of games at developer Newtoy. Zynga acquired the Words with Friends developer in late 2010. The brothers departed Zynga in 2012. You can learn more about Paul's take on VR in our coverage of a SXSW Interactive panel last year and his thoughts on Ouya in Polygon's interview.
Lucky's Tale isn't the first publishing deal for the company behind the VR headset. In February, Oculus and CCP games announced that the companies would co-publish the dogfighting game Eve: Valkyrie, which you can see below.
