To celebrate the release of The Last of Us Remastered for PlayStation 4, the PlayStation Blog released an interview with the stars of the game in which they recall the first time they met and the musical alternate ending.
The video, which you can watch above, features Ashley Johnson (Ellie) talking briefly about working with the actor auditioning for Joel just before Troy Baker. In one cut, Johnson pushed the actor — only to be pushed right back, resulting in a tumble. After she regained her feet, Johnson reacted with some of Ellie's signature spirit.
"Alright, we're gonna do this," she said of her thoughts at the time. "I'm totally gonna fight this motherfucker."
The two never came to physical blows, of course, and Baker was ultimately cast for the part. But the pair fans know today could have been quite different, the actress added.
"It would have been a different Joel and Ellie," Johnson joked. "Very combative and not the kind of feels that they were going for."
Baker also talked about his first meeting with Johnson, who was clearly frustrated at the time. Upon seeing the actress, Baker was overcome with an urge to take care of her — not that she needed to be taken care of, he added.
"I could get mad at you," Baker said. "You could piss me off. But at the end of the day, I still wanted to take care of you."
The video also includes the pair's discussion of the alternate ending, in which Joel and another character have a sing-off.
A live version of the cut was performed last night during Naughty Dog's on-stage presentation of select scenes from the game. Naughty Dog also revealed the game's untold epilogue that was cut from the final game.
