PixelJunk dev Q-Games' new title is The Tomorrow Children (update)

The next game from PixelJunk developer Q-Games is The Tomorrow Children, the studio announced today during Sony's Gamescom press conference.

The game will be coming exclusively to PlayStation 4 as part of a collaboration with Sony Worldwide Studios.

In The Tomorrow Children, all of humankind has been trapped, forced to live together in small colonies and fight against common adversaries including large spider-like beasts and other creatures, as well as what appears to be a sinister-looking old man.

Update: In a post on the European PlayStation Blog, Q-Games head Dylan Cuthbert elaborated on the story of The Tomorrow Children. The game will take place in a future "re-imagined from the after-effects of an experiment in 1960s Russia that attempted to ‘sublime' the human race," which would meld all human minds into one consciousness. The experiment goes wrong, destroying the planet. It takes humanity 90 years to rebuilt in The Void, in which players will take part in a society based on Marxist ideals from the 1960s. Players will begin as a proletariat class citizen and complete tasks that will bolster ranks and earn "ration" coupons for better abilities.

Exploration will be key as players mine for new materials and defend towns against roaming monsters. Materials can also be crafted into buildings and weapons. The overall goal is to restore the human population, but ultimately players will have to work together to achieve it.

"The human race will only survive if we cooperate, and as you do things your projection will become briefly visible in other player's realities," Cuthbert wrote. "Everything you do to manipulate the world is shared with everyone else in each stage."
