'Game of Thrones'-inspired opera-TV mashup hits New York next year

A night of opera music inspired by the wildly popular novels and HBO series Game of Thrones will be played by the One World Symphony next February, The Guardian reports.

The series is part of the "Operasodes season," which adapts modern TV shows into an evening of music using previously written works. Those who attend the show, which runs Feb. 1-2 in New York, will hear music from Richard Wagner, Annie Lennox, Sergei Prokofiev, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and more. According to Sung Jin Hong, artistic director and composer conductor of One World Symphony, Game of Thrones lends itself to opera quite well.

"The show has all the drama, intrigue and passion that operas have been providing us for centuries: seduction, obsession, deception, political maneuvering, romance, heartbreak, incest — to name a few," Hong said.

General tickets for the show are available for $40, while student and senior tickets are $30. The One World Symphony is also performing music inspired by New Girl (starring Zooey Deschanel) and Hannibal, the TV series based on Hannibal Lector novel Red Dragon. Unlike the others, Hannibal will be an original opera composed by Hong — a treatment he said he'd like to give to Game of Thrones one day.

"Cersei Lannister ... would make Salomé look like a virgin saint," Hong told the Guardian. "Her strength may be her imagination, and her saving grace may be her unconditional love for her son, who may be even more wicked ... Might as well write a whole opera on her, right?"
