Super III, a new game from Super 91 Studios, aims to combine the "tight and responsive" controls of Super Meat Boy and the mission system of Super Mario 64 in its gameplay.
In Super III, players control the alien III on a mission to save human survivors stranded after a galactic war. The game is a fast-paced 2D puzzle-platformer in which players can climb or quickly warp across the level to make their way through.
"Controls are very tight and responsive, similar to Super Meat Boy's, making you feel it was your fault if when you make a mistake and not feel cheated by the game," Super 91 told Polygon via email.
Players can choose new missions by entering different portals; like Super Mario 64, each level has several missions to be completed. Tasks include killing enemies, solving puzzles or exploring the area.
Super III is currently collecting votes on Steam Greenlight, while Super 91 Studios is raising funds via Kickstarter. The developer is seeking $39,000 by Sept. 18. For more on how the game plays, check out the video above.
Joel Corelitz, the composer on titles such as The Unfinished Swan and Hohokum, will score the game. Super III is being developed for Linux, Mac and Windows PC, while the studio has plans for PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita and Xbox One. It's expected to launch in Q2 of 2015.
