An upcoming patch for Ultra Street Fighter 4 will introduce Omega Mode, a new addition to the fighting game that substantially mixes up how its 44 fighters play, Capcom announced at Tokyo Game Show today. Omega Mode changes the standard move sets and special moves in an effort to freshen up Street Fighter 4's familiar cast.
Omega Mode will be a free update to the game. It focuses on making Ultra Street Fighter 4's roster feel new rather than focusing on balance, according to Capcom Unity's Peter "Combofiend" Rosas. "This means that strong, fan favorite attacks such as Ken's Shinppu Jinrai Kyaku and Sagat's Tiger Raid make their return," Rosas said, "while other characters such as Zangief gain new abilities, like being able to combo into his command throws."
Ultra Street Fighter 4's Omega Mode is coming after the version 1.04 update to the game and can be played online, though only in unranked matches. Official Capcom tournaments and Capcom Pro Tour affiliate tournaments will use the game's default tuning, not Omega Mode, Rosas noted, as "the tournament standard."
For a sneak peek at how Omega Mode affects characters like Ken, Guile, Chun-li and Dhalsim, check out Rosas' demo video below.
Correction: An earlier version of this story said that Omega Mode would arrive with the 1.04 patch. These are two separate releases. The story has been updated to reflect this.
