PS4 gets free online multiplayer this weekend

Online multiplayer will be free to all PlayStation 4 during a promotion this coming weekend, PlayStation Blog announced today. Unlike PlayStation 3, a $50 PlayStation Plus subscription is required to access online features on the PS4.

The free weekend will last from Friday, Sept. 26 at 3:01 a.m. ET to Monday, Sept. 29 at 2:59 a.m. ET.

By the coming weekend, PlayStation 4 will have seen a number of high-profile third party releases with major online components, including Madden NFL 15, FIFA 15, and Destiny. Though Destiny is structurally an online multiplayer game, its main story and side missions can be played without a PlayStation Plus subscription. The game also shipped with a 30-day trial code for the service.

Online multiplayer has been free on PlayStation 3 since the console's launch; Sony announced at E3 2013 that it would require a PlayStation Plus subscription for online features on the PS4, similar to how Xbox Live charges for the same features. Xbox Live frequently offers free multiplayer weekends as well.
