The Xbox One version of Mojang's creative sandbox game Minecraft will be released this Friday, Sept. 5, Microsoft announced today.
Minecraft: Xbox One Edition will cost $19.99, but players who have already purchased the Xbox 360 version of the game can upgrade for $4.99 through the Xbox Store. Later this month, Microsoft says physical retailers will begin selling download codes for the game, and Minecraft: Xbox One Edition will get a disc-based retail release this holiday season.
Xbox One owners will be able to re-download digital content purchased for the Xbox 360 version of the game to Minecraft: Xbox One Edition, which boasts worlds 36 times larger than its previous generation counterpart. More than 13 million copies of the Xbox 360 edition of Minecraft have been sold to date, Microsoft says.
Developer 4J Studios, which handles the console versions of the game, also has a PlayStation 4 version of Minecraft in the works. Minecraft is also available on Android, iOS, Linux, Mac PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita and Windows PC.
