Mario Series Amiibos launching March 20 with functionality for certain games

A new series of Amiibos featuring characters from the Mario universe — some of which have already received the Amiibo treatment — will be released in stores on March 20.

The set will include Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Bowser and Toad, many of whom were featured in the first set of Amiibos released alongside Super Smash Bros. for Wii U last year. The set is mainly geared for the upcoming Wii U title Mario Party 10, which features all six as playable characters. Amiibo-owning Mario Party 10 players can use their figurines as pawns in-game, and can customize their characters with power-ups that they can take into each match.

Also, owners of the Toad Amiibo can unlock more functionality in last year's Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. After tapping your Amiibo to the Gamepad while playing a level, a "pixel Toad" will be hidden somewhere in the stage, just waiting for you to root him out.

The Amiibos will be sold in stores, according to the latest Nintendo Direct, and you can grab the new Mario Amiibo in a bundle with Mario Party 10 when the game launches March 20. Nintendo will also publish a chart detailing which versions of each Amiibo is compatible with which games.

Update: In addition, a new series of Super Smash Bros.-themed amiibo, which include  Robin, Lucina, Pac-Man, Wario, Ness and Charizard, will launch this spring, and be compatible with the Wii U and 3DS versions of the title.
