2015 Oscar nominees announced, led by Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel (correction)

New, 30 comments

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 87th Academy Awards today, and the list is already one of the more controversial sets of Oscar nods in recent memory.

Alejandro González Iñárritu's Birdman (image above) and Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel tied for the lead with nominations in nine categories each, followed by Morten Tyldum's The Imitation Game with eight. All three of those men were recognized in the Best Director category, while Selma director Ava DuVernay — who would have been the first black woman to be nominated for directing — was left out. The historical drama about the civil rights movement received nominations only in the Best Original Song and Best Picture fields; David Oyelowo's acclaimed performance as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. received no recognition for Best Actor.

Selma joined seven other films in the Best Picture race: American Sniper, Birdman, Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything and Whiplash. The Academy doubled the size of the Best Picture field from five to 10 in 2009 for the 2010 Oscars, then tweaked the category two years later, allowing for a list of between five and 10 nominees depending on voting.

Best Animated Feature is another confounding category, with the critically and commercially successful CG film The Lego Movie omitted in favor of Big Hero 6, The Boxtrolls, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Song of the Sea and The Tale of the Princess Kaguya. Fans of The Lego Movie are likely to find its nod for Best Song ("Everything is Awesome") a small consolation.

The 87th Academy Awards will begin at 7 p.m. ET on Sunday, Feb. 22, on ABC. You can see the full list of nominees below, and then see how much overlap there is with Polygon's favorite films of 2014.

Correction: Birdman was the film that tied with The Grand Budapest Hotel with nine nominations, not Boyhood. We've edited the article to reflect this.
