This great Arma 3 mod is all 'pew pew,' 'vroom' and 'KA-BOOOSH!'

Charlie Hall is Polygon’s tabletop editor. In 10-plus years as a journalist & photographer, he has covered simulation, strategy, and spacefaring games, as well as public policy.

Arma 3 is one of the most realistic, the most advanced combined arms infantry simulations on the market today. It is beloved by active duty military, as well as gamers the world over. It's so dynamic that military and police forces use it for training. And now, there is finally a sound mod that brings a kind of immersion that the franchise simply hasn't seen before.

LOSounds 2 is a total modification for Arma 3. Its designers state that it aims to create the most realistic soundscape possible.

"We asked experienced shooters what each weapon, vehicle, and even gear part should sound like," the team wrote, "and recreated it with an enormous focus on detail."

LOSounds 2 is a finalist in Bohemia Interactive's Make Arma Not War contest, an open competition for mission designers and modders. The prize pool of €500,000 will be spread across four categories, including Total Modification, Single-player Game Mode, Multiplayer Game Mode and Add-on.

Winners in a special category, the Health Care in Danger Special Award, will also be offered a trip to a real war zone as part of a contingent from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Expect Polygon's impressions on a selection of these mods to be published before the contest ends in March of this year. For a complete list, head to BI's website.
