Kickstarter today released its end-of-the-year numbers for 2014. The games category was among the top five for both number of successful projects and total dollars raised.
In 2014 Kickstarter projects raised a total of $529 million. That's a rate of $1,000 per minute, a significant increase over 2013 in which Kickstarter raised $480 million.
Breaking campaigns down by category, Kickstarter said that the category with the most successful campaigns was music (4,009), followed closely by film and movies (3,846). Next came publishing (2,064) and then games (1,980).
As far as raw dollars pledged, technology was the winning category ($125 million), followed by design ($96.7 million) and games ($89.1 million). You can see the rest of the breakdown here.
The third most-backed Kickstarter of the year, behind a reboot of Reading Rainbow and a hi-tech portable cooler, was Kingdom Come: Deliverance. The game, described as "Dungeons & no Dragons," had more than 35,000 backers.
For those planning a Kickstarter this year, take note: The best time, statistically, to capture a backer's pledge would be in the early afternoon of a Wednesday in August.
Kickstarter's stats page keeps a running tally of projects. Polygon has reached out to the crowdfunding site via email to learn more about how this year's numbers in the gaming category compare to previous years.
