Swap in bigger, cheaper PS4 hard drives with Nyko's new Data Bank add-on

Accessory maker Nyko is releasing a new hard drive dock for the PlayStation 4 that, while maybe not the most elegant of accessories, allows console owners to swap in larger 3.5 inch hard drives for extra storage.

The Nyko Data Bank introduces compatibility for 3.5 inch hard drives — instead of 2.5 inch hard drives — as internal storage. That means larger, faster hard drives at lower cost, if you're looking to upgrade the PS4's standard 500 GB drive.

The Data Bank comes with a built-in LED strip that will illuminate while the PS4 accesses the drive's memory and Nyko says installing the add-on is a simple, one-screw process. Nyko didn't announce a price for the Data Bank, but expects to ship the accessory in the first half of 2015.

Nyko plans to ship another PS4 accessory during that same period: the Type Pad keyboard attachment.

Nyko Type Pad

The Type Pad is a QWERTY keyboard designed to attach to a DualShock 4 controller. It's compatible with Bluetooth keyboard-enable applications and games, Nyko says, and comes with a ".com" button and mini analog nub for navigation. Nyko's Type Pad can be charged simultaneously with the DualShock 4 controller via micro-USB.
