Quantic Dream reveals Detroit (and the return of 'Kara') for PS4

The next game from Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls developer Quantic Dream is called Detroit and it's headed to PlayStation 4, designer David Cage announced at Sony's Paris Games Week press conference today.

You're probably already familiar with its protagonist, Kara, who made an appearance in a tech demo Quantic Dream released in 2012.

Detroit, which carries the tagline "Become Human," explores what happens when Kara, an android, leaves her factory and explores a life she wasn't built for. Cage says the PlayStation 4 game will also explore the question "What does it mean to be human?"

In the game's debut trailer, we see a futuristic world where lifelike androids co-exist with humans, though they are clearly segregated and relegated to serving their creators.

"Kara" was unveiled in 2012 as a demo for PlayStation 3. At the time, Cage said that "Kara" was not the studio's next game — it was working on Beyond: Two Souls at the time — but was built to showcase new graphics and performance capture technology.

"We wanted to do what Avatar did by having one full performance where we capture everything at the same time," Cage said at the time. "And we wanted to demonstrate these new performance capture techniques and the new engine before going into production, so we developed a short showcase that would allow us to test these ideas and technologies. This is how 'Kara' was created.

"'Kara' is not our next game. It's not the character, it's not the world, it's not the story. ... We do things in a very strange way here, things that have nothing to do with the games we make. But I think that's a part of the DNA of the studio, and hopefully something that people like about us — they never know what they're going to get!"
