The first new golf course promised under Rory McIlroy PGA Tour's six-month schedule of free content is now available, EA Sports says.
Treasure Island, which is a fictitious 18-hole course, is available now for the game on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It brings to 15 the number of courses available to the game.
With a nearby volcano oozing lava and other exotic features, Treasure Island appears to be more of a "fantasy" style course in the mode of Grand Canyon or the Battlefield 4-themed Paracel Storm, which showcase exotic vistas and unorthodox layouts and obstacles.
These courses are not played in the career mode, like the more down-to-earth fictional courses Wetlands and Lighthouse Pointe. The next three courses coming to Rory McIlroy PGA Tour will all be real world — Quail Hollow Club of Charlotte, North Carolina, TPC Stadium at PGA West in La Quinta, California and Oakmont Country Club in suburban Pittsburgh.
Furthermore, tour pro Dustin Johnson has now been added to the game's lineup of playable golfers. He'll be joined by Henrik Stenson, also free, sometime later.
Rory McIlroy PGA Tour was praised for its enhanced gameplay but it wasn't enough to overcome the skimpy offerings — just 12 courses, eight of them real — at launch. Polygon scored the game a 6.0, in particular lamenting the thin career mode but pleased with the swing mechanisms and changes to putting.
