All Xbox One controllers will be remappable eventually, says Xbox director

Controller remapping will be a feature on all Xbox One controllers eventually, not just the new Elite controller, Microsoft's director of program management told users over Twitter today.

Mike Ybarra, responding to a follower who is in the closed beta for the Xbox One's new user interface, said today that configuration options are "coming for all controllers soon." The user had noted that PlayStation 4 allows remapping the buttons on the system's standard controllers.

The Xbox Elite controller is customizable in ways beyond button reassignment, and as such carries a beefy price tag — $149.99. That controller ships Oct. 27. (In time for Halo 5: Guardians, of course.)

No word on when the button remapping feature will deploy to all controllers, though. The new Xbox One experience is set to roll out in November, along with a heavily anticipated Xbox 360 backward compatibility feature. For more on what's in store, see this preview of the new interface from E3 2015.
