Metal Gear Online rolling out worldwide today

Charlie Hall is Polygon’s tabletop editor. In 10-plus years as a journalist & photographer, he has covered simulation, strategy, and spacefaring games, as well as public policy.

Early this morning Metal Gear Online, the free multiplayer add on for Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, began rolling out for both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One systems worldwide. The first country to be lit up was the U.K., where the game is playable right now.

Here in North America the game has been updated and now features an option to enter the Online game mode. However, an additional download has not yet made its way into the PlayStation or Xbox online stores. Once that data is available, players here in the U.S. should be able to log in and play.

Konami is sharing server status live at their website. The Windows PC version of Metal Gear Online is scheduled for 2016.
