AMC's Preacher raises hell in its first trailer

During tonight's The Walking Dead, AMC aired the first trailer for its new series Preacher, starring Dominic Cooper, Joseph Gilgun and Ruth Negga.

Garth Ennis' long-running comic series Preacher is one of the weirdest and wildest stories to come out of DC Comics' Vertigo imprint, and is nearly impossible to sum up neatly in a sentence or two. Broadly, it's the story of a southern preacher who becomes host to the spirit of the child of an angel and a demon — making him more powerful than God — and his search for the creator of the universe, who has fled from creation in fear of His own destruction.

Less broadly, the story involves that preacher's relationship with his his abusive family, his on-again-off-again girlfriend Tulip and his best friend, a century-old Irish vampire. Story arcs involving the world religious conspiracy, peyote-fueled trips of self-discovery, the last descendant of Christ and a teenage boy nicknamed Arseface after he survived a shotgun blast to the head follow.

How much of that will actually make it to the AMC adaptation remains an open, but fascinating, question.
