Peter Mayhew, otherwise known as Chewbacca, recently reached out to a Star Wars fan following the death of his friend in a touching letter shared on Reddit.
Addressed to a young Star Wars fan named Liam, the actor reached out after receiving news that Liam's best friend and fellow Star Wars obsessive, Sam, had passed away.
"I am sorry to hear that you won't be able to see the new Star Wars movie with your friend Sam," Mayhew wrote. "I know that sometimes things happen and we can't figure out why and all we feel is sadness."
Expressing his sympathy, the Wookiee's actor also imparted some words of comfort: "I know that you are going to love Star Wars: The Force Awakens and I bet you make some new friends that also love Star Wars!"
Sam's father posted Mayhew's letter on the Star Wars subreddit, and explained that his seven-year-old son had been involved in a tragic accident. The pair of best friends had planned on seeing Star Wars: The Force Awakens together. Somehow, news of the boy's death trickled down to Mayhew, who responded with the supportive note.
The cast and crew of Star Wars has been in the news for supporting fans in need as of late. Recently, director J.J. Abrams screened the upcoming film for a terminally ill fan as his "last wish."
Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens Dec. 18.
