Let's cut to the chase quickly: Netgear's Nighthawk is on sale for $150 right now on Amazon (in the US). I originally gave impressions of the Nighthawk back in 2013, and since then, it's become a virus, spreading through word of mouth through the Polygon staff until something like half of us own them and won't shut up about them to anyone who will listen.
The Nighthawk has excellent range, and this model in particular allows me to use my full 300Mbps down internet connection over its 802.11AC connection. Even N devices get great performance from it, and its coverage is excellent. Setup and management is a snap, even when connecting the router directly to a home gateway. I hate the expression, but mostly, it just works, and it works extremely well.
Routers are boring, I get it. But chances are your router is the gatekeeper for every gaming console, computer, and phone in to the sweet nectar of the internet (or your modem, anyway). And if your router sucks — and let's face it, most of them are terrible — then the rest of your internet experience will suffer as well. So think about it.
