Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 gets PC mod, map tool support in 2016, Alpha in March

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will most likely be getting modding and mapping tools for its PC version in 2016 with alpha testing planned for March, the game's developers announced today.

Treyarch posted that modding and mapping is one of the top requests the devs hear from fans, but they also dropped in a pretty big cautionary note about how the support may or may not roll-out:

"Please remember that this is software development, so things don't always work out exactly as planned," according to the blog post. "Sometimes features slip or drop off altogether, sometimes they get replaced with other, more awesome features as we hit into limitations of our original plans."

That said, the current plans for mod and map tool support include:

  • You will be able to create Maps & Game Modes and more!
  • We will include Unranked Dedicated Server Files with the tools so you can run servers with modded content anywhere you choose.
  • We will provide an Unranked Server Browser so you can easily find and join servers with modded content.
  • Closed Alpha target date: March 2016

Treyarch promises to keep fans up to speed with developer blog posts as they work on the new feature. Among the updates expected is timing for an open beta.
