The first trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence aired this afternoon during Fox's NFL broadcasts. See it for yourself above.
Announced back in June, Independence Day Resurgence will pick up the story in real time, 20 years after the events of 1996's Independence Day. Original cast members Vivica A. Fox and Jeff Goldblum will reprise their roles, but Will Smith is out.
The trailer features President Whitmore's speech from the original film, narrating a montage of images showing that the alien threat has returned. It sounds like humankind has used the alien technology to make some pretty cool advancements, and now the extraterrestrial Rent-A-Center is coming to repossess its merch.
The release window for Independence Day Resurgence is "summer." For those wondering, July 4, 2016 is on a Monday, which typically isn't a premiere day in the U.S. (The original launched July 2, 1996.)
