Will Smith isn't a part of the Independence Day sequel, but his character's fate has finally been revealed.
Thanks to a viral site that was designed specifically for the new film, Independence Day: Resurgence, it has been confirmed that Smith's alien-fighting pilot Steve Hiller was killed after the events of the first film.
According to the site, "while test piloting the ESD's first alien hybrid fighter, an unknown malfunction causes the untimely death of Col. Hiller.
"Hiller's valor in the War of '96 made him a beloved global icon whose selfless assault against the alien mothership lead directly to the enemy's defeat. He is survived by his wife Jasmine and son Dylan."
In the new film, Vivica Fox will return to reprise her role as Jasmine, while son Dylan will be played by Jessie Usher. Smith never gave a reason for why he didn't want to return to the franchise, but having him killed off does send a pretty interesting message.
Independence Day: Resurgence hits theaters June 24, 2016. Check out the trailer.
