Super Mario Maker gets new creation items and course browser next week

It's about to get much easier to find levels, both inside and outside the game

Nintendo will expand the scope of Super Mario Maker next week with a free update that adds a few new objects to the game's creation tools, the company announced today.

The patch — which will go live Dec. 21 in North America and Dec. 22 in the U.K. — includes just three items, but two of them bring in a world of new possibilities for level creators. Super Mario Maker already includes the Koopa Clown Car, but the update will add a fire version of the vehicle; the Fire Koopa Clown Car can shoot fireballs, and its charged shot can destroy blocks. P Warp Doors are visible only when a P Switch is active, so they'll give designers more ways to mess with players' minds. And the doughnut-shaped Bumper object works like, well, a bumper in a pinball game.

In addition, Super Mario Maker's upcoming update will make world records visible for every uploaded course, giving players the opportunity to see the fastest clear time. And alongside the release of the patch, Nintendo will launch the previously announced website allowing players to search for courses. Known as "Super Mario Maker Bookmark," the website will let players log in with their Nintendo Network ID and browse courses with numerous filters and options.

Players can bookmark levels on the website, and those courses will then show up in the Course World tab within Super Mario Maker. The Course World section of the game will offer the same search options, so people can find a level they want to play and jump right in by hitting the "play now" button.
