Ford Motor Company was founded in 1903, and in the 112 years since has sold millions of vehicles to NFL viewers each Sunday with traditional images of families, sunlit pastoral settings, and the quiet dignity of four-wheel drive. So what in God's name is Dragon Ball Z doing in this advertisement?
It's not just that Krillin and Gohan are here stumping for the (reads from cue card) convenient and fun 2016 Ford Focus with an EPA-estimated 42 highway miles per gallon, it's that they are doing so with all of the canned earnestness of a paid pitchman from some less exciting job, like country music songwriting. My mind is blown trying to picture the marketing study that puts DBZ fans in a Venn diagram with a sensible four-door domestic sedan, but hell, they're all probably old and have kids, too.
Apparently someone ran the numbers, came up with this pitch and got it approved. I'd love to have been a fly on the wall for that meeting.
