Star Wars: The Force Awakens sets new Monday box office record, too

The biggest Monday at the movies since 2004

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has broken another record: Yesterday, the film made $40.1 million, besting Spider-Man 2 for highest-grossing Monday at the box office.

The sequel to Spider-Man remained the one to beat since it made $27.1 million over the Fourth of July weekend back in 2004. The Force Awakens not only topped that number handily, but it earned the highest Monday earnings title in other countries, too. The seventh Star Wars film made an extra $41 million internationally yesterday and had the U.K., Ireland and France's biggest Mondays ever, too.

Over the weekend, the film grossed $529 million around the world. It took in $238 million domestically, leading to the biggest opening weekend in this market. According to industry analysts, The Force Awakens is on pace to join the ranks of Avatar and Titanic as one of the only movies to ever make more than $2 billion.

In case you are still on the fence about seeing the film, perhaps our spoiler-free review will change your mind. On the other hand, if you're wondering whether to go to the theater to see Star Wars again, read up on some of the cameos you might have missed during your first go-around to help make your double-dipping decision.
