Star Wars: The Force Awakens makes $1 billion in record time

Had a monster Christmas weekend

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has officially joined the pantheon of billion-dollar earners, following a record-breaking holiday weekend at the box office. After just 12 days in theaters, the seventh Star Wars film not only made more than $1 billion in ticket sales, but did so faster than any film in history, according to The Associated Press.

On Christmas Day alone, the film grossed $49.3 million, setting a new high bar for movies. Its $153.5 million gross over this weekend also marks the best ever for a film in its second weekend.

The fact that the film has yet to open in China, the world's second biggest moviegoing market, makes the feat all the more impressive.

To recap the records that The Force Awakens has set in its first two weeks: most money earned in Thursday night preview screenings; highest-grossing opening weekend ever; biggest Monday ever; and biggest Tuesday ever.
