Final Fantasy 9 headed to PC and smartphones (update)

The return of a 15-year-old classic

Final Fantasy 9 is set to make its debut on Android, iOS and Windows PC, Square Enix announced today.

No release date has been confirmed for the ports as of yet, but the publisher did share a trailer for the upcoming re-release. You can check it out above. Final Fantasy fans might appreciate that the game doesn't look a whole lot different from the original, unlike the recent, revamped Steam and smartphone ports of Final Fantasy 6.

As the last Final Fantasy title for the original PlayStation console, the game first launched in November 2000. It's since been made available as a downloadable classic on the PlayStation Store, but this marks the first time it will be available on a non-PlayStation platform.

Update: The Steam page for the game is now live, and reveals that Final Fantasy 9 will launch sometime later this month. The PC port will offer achievements, autosave, high-definition graphics and new modes, such as no-encounter and high-speed.
