Board game maker Cryptozoic Entertainment is ready to serve all your supernatural elimination needs, at least in the realm of tabletop gaming, with Ghostbusters: The Board Game. The game-maker's latest, the first Ghostbusters board game in some 30 years and officially licensed by Sony, is currently on Kickstarter seeking funding.
Ghostbusters: The Board Game is described by Cryptozoic as an episodic adventure game for one to four players that is "customizable, cooperative and highly re-playable." The board game features the original four Ghostbusters (Venkman, Stantz, Spengler and Zeddemore) as playable characters, each with their own traits, tools and talents. The game will also include dozens of spooks, specters and ghosts, including boss characters the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, Slimer and Idulnas, a character from the Ghostbusters comics.
Cryptozoic's take on Ghostbusters draws from the movies, cartoons, comics and toylines, and features art from Dan Schoening, the artist of IDW's Ghostbusters comic book series.
There's a lot in the box. The base version of Ghostbusters: The Board Game includes 47 plastic miniature figures, 10 game board tiles, six dice, 43 tokens, a PKE meter, four player cards and six ghost cards. That version runs $80 on Kickstarter.
There's a deluxe version too, which is available for $125. In addition to a slick-looking black box, the deluxe edition adds the Sandman boss and ghost card, four double-sided Sedgewick Hotel game board tiles, glow-in-the-dark dice and a super sized Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, as well as additional playable episodes.
Cryptozoic says Ghostbusters: The Board Game is a fast-paced experience. Episodes takes about 30 "intense minutes" to play and conclude with a boss battle against one of the game's boss ghosts. More difficult games of Ghostbusters can last two hours or so, Cryptozoic says.
The game's Kickstarter campaign has a bunch of extras that backers can add — some extra "impossible mode" ghost figures, mainly — and promises stretch goals. Cryptozoic Entertainment, maker of board and card games based on The Walking Dead, Adventure Time, The Lord of the Rings and other properties, is seeking $250,000 to make Ghostbusters: The Board Game a reality. Based on early pledges, they're going to make that easily.
Ghostbusters: The Board Game is expected to ship to backers in North America, the UK and all EU member countries, Australia and New Zealand in October.
Cryptozoic previously found success on Kickstarter in 2013, when the company crowdfunded Hex, its massively multiplayer online game-trading card game mash-up designed by the World of Warcraft Trading Card Game.
