The Strong National Museum of Play has launched the World Video Game Hall of Fame, an organization to recognize influential video games throughout the history of the medium, The Strong announced yesterday.

Located in Rochester, New York, The Strong is renowned for the International Center for the History of Electronic Games, which is dedicated to video game preservation. The museum is also home to the National Toy Hall of Fame. The World Video Game Hall of Fame is designed to "recognize individual electronic games of all types — arcade, console, computer, handheld, and mobile — that have enjoyed popularity over a sustained period and have exerted influence on the video game industry or on popular culture and society in general," according to a press release from The Strong.

Games will be considered for entry into the World Video Game Hall of Fame based on four criteria: icon-status (that the game is recognized and remembered), longevity (that the game has enjoyed sustained popularity), geographical reach (that the game is known around the world) and influence (that the game has had an impact on subsequent games, other forms of entertainment, or pop culture and society).

"There is no other video game award and recognition program such as this, which focuses solely on individual game titles across platforms and their impact over time and across international borders," said G. Rollie Adams, president and CEO of The Strong.

If you have some games in mind for the World Video Game Hall of Fame, you can head to its website by March 31 to submit your nominations for the inaugural class of honorees, which will be announced in June. The finalists will be determined by a committee at the museum, while the inductees will be chosen based on the advice of an international group composed of journalists, scholars and other individuals.
