Seven lives — OK, they're NPCs — ruined by video games

Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

Like comic books, video games are full of unaddressed collateral damage. The Thing and the Hulk wreck Manhattan before bro-hugging out their differences, and no one wonders about the cleanup. Likewise, there are many NPCs who have their lives irrevocably altered by our careless misadventrures. Outside Xbox presents us these seven.

Warning: There are spoilers in this video for L.A. Noire, Grand Theft Auto 5, Final Fight (I guess???), Sleeping Dogs, Mass Effect, The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim and especially in the last one, if you have not completed The Walking Dead: Season One.

These are not the only seven instances — even within their own games. Reaching into my memory, I remember how, in Skyrim, I finally had enough of Bolund's passive-aggressive racism in Falkreath — especially since I was thane there — and broke into his home to slice his throat (with a Soul Trap dagger! Thanks for recharging my Elven Bow of Embers, asshole!)

I slipped out the door and smirked to myself at the clean kill, until his brother Solaf — who knew I did it, but would never confront me — ran through the streets shouting "Mercy!!!" I realized that everyone has assholes in their family, and they're still loved and deserve to live.

Other candidates for hapless ruin: The nerds in Bully ("Because you're a bastard!" Yes. I am.) and the 2011 Philadelphia Eagles in Madden.

The next level of puzzles.
