The PlayStation Vita is now three years old, and Sony is celebrating the occasion with some free goodies and deep discounts in a big sale that starts tomorrow, the company announced today.
Sony launched the Vita in North America three years ago yesterday — Feb. 22, 2012, just over two months after the handheld's debut in Japan. The original unit was supplanted by the "slim" PCH-2000 model last May.
Vita users can pick up as many as three free items over the next week. The first is a cute Toro and Friends theme for the Vita dashboard, which regularly costs $1.99 but will be available gratis from Feb. 26 through March 2. Players of Fat Princess: Piece of Cake, the free-to-play match-3 game that was released last month, can download a free pack of eight gold coins (regularly 99 cents). And Destiny of Spirits players can receive a Spirit called Himiko that's usually available only while hunting in the in-game region of Japan. Users must complete the tutorial by midnight on Feb. 25 to qualify for the gift.
The birthday sale itself will begin tomorrow, Feb. 24. Discounts of up to 70 percent (80 percent for PlayStation Plus subscribers) are available on 38 different Vita games, including Jak and Daxter Collection, Muramasa Rebirth (screenshot above) and Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward.
