The rumors are true: Nintendo will release a Gold Edition Super Mario amiibo exclusively at 3,000 Walmart stores on March 20.

According to a Nintendo press release today, the special edition amiibo will retail for $12.96. The product appears on Walmart's website, but is already out of stock online.

The glittering plumber will arrive in Walmart the same day that Mario Party 10 is released and represent the third Mario amiibo, after the original "fireball" and the upcoming "wave" editions.

News about the now-official product began to spread early this month, based on listings from Nintendo's website that were later removed. By mid-month, Gold Edition Super Mario's Walmart exclusivity leaked through a poster. The Silver Edition from the initial report hasn't been officially announced yet.

Alongside the golden Mario, Nintendo will release a new series of amiibo, including Bowser, Luigi, a non-golden Mario, Peach, Toad and Yoshi. All six characters will be playable in Mario Party 10. Toad's figurine will also unlock a hidden "pixel Toad" in Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker on Wii U. At a Nintendo Direct event in January, the company detailed all of the amiibo set to arrive this spring.

Nintendo released its amiibo line of toys to life figurines, similar to Disney Infinity and Skylanders, last year. They typically retail for $12.99, but three amiibo received price cuts earlier this week.
