PlayStation Mobile shutting down this year

Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

PlayStation Mobile, the development, storefront and support structure for indie games on certified Android devices and the PlayStation Vita, will close down completely this year, Sony said today.

PlayStation Mobile will stop distributing content on July 15 and the entire service will come to an end Sept. 10. The PlayStation Mobile for Android app will be unavailable after then.

That means PS Vita consumers who have bought PlayStation Mobile content will be unable to re-download it after Sept. 10, though they will still be able to access it. To do so, they must activate their Vita on the service before Sept. 10. Instructions for doing so are in this blog post.

For developers, the PlayStation Mobile Developer Portal closes on Nov. 30.

PlayStation Mobile launched in 2012 with the goal of cultivating independent development on mobile devices certified by Sony. In August 2014, PlayStation ended its support of PlayStation Mobile for Android, and discontinued certification of devices other than the Vita, though the service continued to exist.
