The American remake of classic Japanese horror film The Ring is getting a prequel titled Rings, Bloody Disgusting reports.
According to sources speaking with the website, the film is set to take place before the events of the 2002 film and will tell the origin of the franchise's haunted VHS tape. "Rings will take place years before the creation of said tape and tell the origin of Samara's reign of terror," reads a synopsis.
It's also noted that Rings is also the name of a short film released alongside the DVD version of The Ring Two in 2005. This short film set up the events between the American remake and its sequel, telling the story of the subculture that has grown following the spread of the haunted tape.
The film will be directed by F. Javier Gutierrez, best known for his work on Before the Fall. Italian actress Matild Lutz will star in the film, which is scheduled for a 3D launch on Nov. 13 this year.
