This weekend on local Tucson morning show Rock102 Mornings with Shmonty & Carolina, director Kevin Smith let the audience know exactly what's going on with the long awaited sequel.
"It's half a script right now, and we're pulling our loot together. We've got up until the beginning of 2016. By the time we get to May 2016, we're going to be shooting."
As yet, there is no information regarding who of the original cast of Mallrats, which included Jason Lee, Ben Affleck, Shannon Doherty and, of course, Stan Lee, will return for a sequel. However, as the production is still in script stages, that's not particularly surprising.
Smith had ignited his fanbase's interest with a teasing tweet on March 12, which laid out his planned shooting schedule through 2016:
We shoot CLERKS III in May. HIT SOMEBODY shoots September to Christmas. Then in Feb 2016, we do MOOSE JAWS. But after that? I smell a rat...— KevinSmith (@ThatKevinSmith) March 12, 2015
Smith said that at this point he's more interested in doing projects that he thinks are fun than ones that are good for his career. To his knowledge, there was not a great clamor for a Mallrats 2. "I had a cool idea and a bunch of investors that were like, 'Do it!' so here we are, man."
The nearly 4,000 (at the time of writing) likes and retweets on what was merely a subtle hint might belie that assumption.
