Here's our first look at Pixels, the Adam Sandler movie that mashes up classic arcade games with summer blockbuster-style global destruction — sort of like Independence Day meets Missile Command.
In Sony Pictures' adaptation of Patrick Jean's 2010 short film — in which New York City is invaded by characters from Space Invaders, Pac-Man and Frogger — aliens have interpreted old-school video games as hostile communication. They invade earth with pixelated weapons of mass destruction based on characters like Q*bert, Donkey Kong and Dig Dug.
Pixels stars Adam Sandler, Peter Dinklage, Josh Gad and Michelle Monaghan. Sandler, Dinklage and Gad play a trio of old-school arcade gamers who are tasked with using their gaming skills to save the world from giant, alien video game sprites. The movie also stars Kevin James as the president of the United States, Jane Krakowski as the first lady and Monaghan as a weapons developer and military specialist.
Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Mrs. Doubtfire, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone) directed Pixels. The movie is slated for release on July 24.
Sony Pictures revealed the movie's posters, starring Pac-Man, Centipede and more, in December. Our first look at Sandler and crew as Pixels' Arcaders — and Dinklage's mullet — was revealed last summer.
