We found thousands of dollars of rare Star Citizen ships hidden inside an asteroid

Charlie Hall is Polygon’s tabletop editor. In 10-plus years as a journalist & photographer, he has covered simulation, strategy, and spacefaring games, as well as public policy.

Chris Robert's Star Citizen may be the most financially successful crowdfunding project ever with more than $74 million raised so far. How's he doing it? By selling beautiful ships by the hangar full. But they're not just pictures or stat sheets sitting inside a browser window. These ships are three-dimensional, interactive, tactile products. So far, only those with lots of disposable cash have been able to lay their eyes on them.

Thanks to one of Polygon's readers, we've been able to secure the coordinates of a secret asteroid base housing just some of Star Citizen's rarest and most beautiful ships. Most of them aren't even flyable in the game's Arena Commander module. But that didn't stop Charlie Hall, Dave Tach and their trusty crowbar from taking a look around.
