Schwarzenegger: Terminator Genisys works because writers 'kind of ignore the last one'

Terminator Genisys star Arnold Schwarzenegger was always willing to reprise his robotic role, and the story for the upcoming fifth installment in the franchise convinced him to come aboard, he told Slash Film.

The T-800 body model appeared in the first three movies, but skipped 2009's Terminator Salvation (though his CG likeness was present). The story in Terminator Genisys, which conveniently circumvents the past, was what pulled him in.

"Well, I always said that I would do another Terminator if the story was great, and I really enjoyed this story when I read it," Schwarzenegger said. "I think that the people who were involved made me feel like this was going to be a good movie and that they were going to go all out with the project. It’s not just 'Let’s exploit this franchise and live off of some of the great ones that we’d done in the past.' They really took it seriously. They really figured out a way to continue the story and kind of ignore the last one, basically."

Terminator Genisys is scheduled for a July 1, 2015 release with a cast that also includes Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, Jason Clarke, J.K. Simmons, Byung-Hun Lee and Matt Smith. Press play below to watch the movie's first trailer.
