Mortal Kombat's gross fatalities are created with slime and a plunger

Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

Visceral may be the most overused word in video games (sorry, people who made Battlefield Hardline) but I'm at a loss for a better one to describe the gross-ass squishy-guts noises of a Mortal Kombat fatality. How NetherRealm Studios gets that sound, however, is a lot more prosaic.

As this video shows (excerpted from yesterday's live broadcast by NetherRealm) it involves a paint-bucket full of slime and a toilet plunger. I recall doing this exact same thing with a cup of He-Man slime back when I was 12.

Of course, this has the potential to create many inadvertent fart noises. We're assuming they aren't part of the final production, but who knows?

Mortal Kombat X launches April 14 on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Carl Weathers is in it.
