GameStop stores nationwide will accept donations for the family of a Philadelphia police officer who died in a gun battle inside one last week.
Beginning tomorrow, patrons may contribute any amount to Robert Wilson III's memorial fund and the store will process it. Wilson's family will receive 100 percent of that donation.
Stores will accept donations from tomorrow until March 24. GameStop itself also made an undisclosed contribution to the memorial fund for Wilson.
On Friday, the company expressed its gratitude to Wilson's family for his efforts to keep customers and staff safe. None were hurt.
Wilson was in uniform when two armed robbers burst into a North Philadelphia GameStop and announced a robbery. Philadelphia police said Wilson moved to draw the assailants' fire away from civilians.
Police said Wilson shot one attacker in the leg before he was fatally wounded in a fusillade of 50 shots exchanged over 30 seconds.
The two suspects were later arrested and have been charged with first-degree murder.
News of the robbery and Wilson's death spread quickly through gaming and mainstream media. Actor Dan Aykroyd, visiting Philadelphia on a promotional tour today, pledged a donation to Wilson's fund.
Wilson was in the GameStop to buy a gift for his 8-year-old son to reward his good grades in school. He and his 1-year-old brother survive their father.
