Video emerges of Russia-only Halo Online

Owen S. Good is a longtime veteran of video games writing, well known for his coverage of sports and racing games.

Halo Online is supposed to be available only in Russia, but that hasn't stopped a team of modders who are prying into what they consider to be the Halo 3-on-PC experience they want. Despite Microsoft's attempts to quash their hacking, they've found copies of the game's client and now video has surfaced showing the game in action.

This video is hosted by GamingPranks on YouTube, and depicts a multiplayer slayer match on the Turf map. The player says the lag seen in the video is attributable to the instability of the PS2p connection.

On Reddit, user KaptainPoland says he's played the game and says it "feels like Halo 3 with sprint, so it's very fast paced." However. "The giant red markers on top of people are pretty annoying, because it makes the game extremely easy."

Microsoft announced Halo Online in late March. 343 Industries said it is running on a modified version of the engine that powers Halo 3, which launched in 2007 but never on PC. Halo Online has no campaign mode; it is all multiplayer.

Last week, hackers got their hands on a copy of the game and then uploaded a toolkit that Microsoft ordered removed under provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Halo Online is a free-to-play game in which users can pay money to customize certain aspects of their fighter; hackers allege it is a pay-to-win scheme.
