It's hard to tell what's generated more speculation around Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the return of franchise veterans like Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford, or the creation of three brand new characters as the film's leads. The actors behind those characters have now given the world some tantalizing but brief descriptions of their roles.
During this morning's opening ceremonies at Star Wars Celebration, host Anthony Breznican invited Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn) and Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron) to describe their characters for a rapt audience.
Daisy Ridley on Rey
"We discover Rey on the desert planet of Jakku. She is a scavenger in a ship graveyard and she is completely self sufficient — she does everything for herself — and very solitary. Until she meets another character, and an adventure begins."
As Ridley mentioned that "other character," the screens in the hall showed this picture of her and break out droid star BB-8.
Perhaps the little round droid will spark her character arc much in the way that R2-D2 did for Luke Skywalker?
John Boyega on Finn
"We find Finn ... he's in incredible danger and the way in which he decides to react to this danger changes his life — number one — and launches him into the Star Wars universe in a very unique way."
When the actor finished, Breznican pressed him again. His character appeared in trailers in Storm Trooper armor. Could he confirm or deny that Finn was a Storm Trooper? It wouldn't be the first time that a character has masqueraded as one.
Boyega played mum with a careful smile, but nodded his head slightly, earning him a playful slap from director J.J. Abrams.
Oscar Isaac on Poe Dameron
"He's the best frikkin' pilot in the galaxy, that's who he is. He's been sent on a mission by a certain princess. And he ends up coming across Mr. John Boyega's character and their fates are forever intertwined."
Of course, there are many other actors playing new characters in the upcoming film, from Game of Thrones' Gwendoline Christie to The Lord of the Rings' Andy Serkis. Before the new trailer was finally revealed, J.J. Abrams assured fans that between now and Star Wars: The Force Awakens' December release, those behind the film will have "a lot of fun revealing" their identities.
