Mortal Kombat X modder's trick unleashes unplayable characters

Mortal Kombat X doesn't let kombatants duel as Baraka, Rain or Sindel, but a modder who goes by XVermillion on Reddit tricked NetherRealm Studios' fighting game into making these characters playable.

XVermillion's changes involved renaming game files, then moving and replacing other files. The Windows PC version of Mortal Kombat X seems to think you're playing as one character as its displays another.

"There are other files you can change to get stuff like Rain's name under the health Bar but the only files I modded are in the 'Assets' folder I believe," XVermillion wrote on Reddit, "there should be 2 associated with Rain (Rain_A.xxx and another one I can't remember but you can just search the folder for Rain)

"Anyway, I backed up the files for Shinnok (the character I'm replacing) and renamed Rain's files to match those associated with Shinnok's 1st costume slot (CHAR_Shinnok_A.xxx and one other, the one that matches Rain's other one) and moved 'em to the folder and overwrote Shinnok's old files with the newly renamed Rain files.

"What you see is just me playing in training mode with what the game thinks is Shinnok but is using Rain's model and moveset,"

It's not a perfect substitution — XVermillion says some default moves seem to override others — but it lets fighters control otherwise non-playable characters encountered in Mortal Kombat X's other modes. You can check out XVermillion's videos of Baraka and Rain below.

Mortal Kombat X arrived for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows PC April 14. For more on the game, be sure to read Polygon's review.
